Hair Extension Care

Hair extensions are great for protective styles, especially when you take care of them.

When I first started wearing extensions, I didn’t realize the maintenance that was required to keep them together. Instead, I treated my extensions like they were my real hair. Anyone that wears extensions knows you can’t do that! If you want your hair extensions to stand out, you’ll need to ensure that you take care of your hair extensions. This is essential.

Each type of hair extension requires different attention. For example, you don’t want to care for human hair extensions, the same way you care for synthetic extensions.

There are some essential tips you need to know to ensure that you don’t ruin your extensions and lose the investment you put into them! Caring for hair extensions isn’t a tough task — let me explain why.

When Caring For Hair Extensions

There are a lot of tips out there for those looking to care for their hair extensions.

However, we’re only going to get into about three different tips. These tips are cardinal rules that you should follow to keep your hair extensions clean and freshly styled. Not only will these tips help you take care of your hair extensions, but they will also increase the longevity of your virgin hair extensions.

Let’s get into it.

Identify Your Hair Extension Type

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when it comes to hair extensions is that they don’t know which type of hair extension they are using. It’s important to know which kind of hair extensions you are wearing so that you can adequately take care of it.

As mentioned before, if you’re wearing synthetic extensions, you don’t want to treat them like human hair extensions and vice versa. Make sure you check to see where your hair comes from and what material it’s made out of.

Lightly Cleanse Every So Often

Depending on the type of hair extensions you have, you’ll need to cleanse them lightly. Whenever I wear hair extensions, I make sure to wash them every two weeks gently.

When it comes to cleansing, you don’t want to use shampoo, but a co-wash with includes a mild shampoo with a light conditioner that are free of sulfates this will help you loosen up tangles.

A light conditioner won’t strip your hair extensions of their necessary shine! If you notice that your hair is difficult to brush through, try using a conditioner to soften the hair and loosen those tangled ends.

Don’t Wear Them Too Long

One of the most important rules of hair extensions is not to wear them too long. Some extensions can be used for up to a year, but that doesn’t mean you should wear them for over a year.

You can take them out, cleanse them and reinstall them. The important thing is that you take them out and give them a break.

The longer you wear the extensions, the more difficult it is to remove build-up and clean the extensions, so they are not run down, dirty and dry. This will cause a lack of luster.

Make Sure to Remember

Taking care of hair extensions don’t have to be difficult. It’s quite simple to keep your hair extensions looking clean, fresh and shiny. Typically, your hair extensions can last six to twelve months interchangeably. Most women like to change their look more often for variety.

Follow these tips and watch how the nature of your hair extensions change!
